John Carvalho, Ph.D
John Carvalho received his B.A. in Psychology from Providence College and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Tennessee. He completed his predoctoral internship at the Boston Consortium in Clinical Psychology, where he worked with veterans through the Boston VA Healthcare System. He is currently practicing at Plaza Psychology & Psychiatry as a licensed Clinical Psychologist.
Dr. Carvalho has experience working with a diverse range of clinical and personal issues, with particular expertise in mood and anxiety disorders (including depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD, generalized anxiety disorder, and panic disorder), as well as grief, loss, trauma, and relationship issues. His practice is rooted in psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral understandings of mental illness and psychotherapy. Dr. Carvalho works collaboratively with his clients to reduce emotional symptoms, resolve ongoing problems, and improve overall quality of life. He believes it is essential to understand each client’s unique history, personality, and individual characteristics in order to best meet his or her needs and accomplish the agreed upon goals for therapy. He primarily works with adults and currently accepts Blue Cross Blue Shield, United Health Care, Tufts Health Plan, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care and Neighborhood Health Plan of Rhode Island.
